Abstract

This study evaluates the influence of communication policy on the practice of journalism in Nigeria and the perception of
journalists on the existence of communication policies in Nigeria. The study employed the survey design. The population
was made up of all the journalists in Ondo State which are about 639. The researchers employed Philip Meyer sampling
guide to sample 100 journalists to form the sample frame. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection.
Findings revealed that the communication policies have helped to repeal restrictive laws in journalism practice, maintain selfregulations, increase in licensing of broadcasters and review the broadcasting code. The study also revealed that the
communication policies do not allow free access to information in Nigeria and that it gives more power to government to
control the press. The study concluded that the policies are established to register, regulate and control media in Nigeria.
Nevertheless, the regulation approaches include licensing, monitoring, sanctioning defaulters, intervening and arbitrating in
conflicts and other control measures.
